The head of the Bank of International Settlements’ Innovation Hub spoke regarding COVID-19 and digital currency, he said:

"The crisis has exposed the value of technologies which enable the economy to operate at arm's length, and partially overcome social distancing. Such drastic changes in work and consumption patterns, such as the dramatic shift to online shopping, will have a lasting impact on economic relationships… The current discussion on central bank digital currency also comes into sharper focus… and the need for any means of payments to be resilient against a broad range of threats."

It’s worth noting Benoît Cœuré was an executive on the board of the European Central Bank from 2011 until 2019.
