Bitcoin now accepted at Whole Foods and other major retailers

Nordstrom and Amazon-owned Whole Foods now accept Bitcoin. Payments startup Flexa and Gemini, the Winklevoss-owned digital currency company, have partnered together. The app works by piggy-backing on digital scanners used to accept payments via smartphone. Retailers—which include Regal Cinemas, Gamestop and Baskin Robbins—use Flexa to configure their scanners to recognize payments from its cryptocurrency app, which is called Spedn. The customer holds up their app to pay & the merchant receives a real-time payment in BTC.

Tyler Winklevoss said he tested the app by depositing $10 of BTC on it, and went to Baskin Robbins, and then Starbucks, and each time it deducted the correct amount, and said it works as advertised. The first widespread, low-friction opportunity for consumers to shop with Bitcoin is potentially a big deal. “The idea of living on crypto is now a reality. You can now do it,” said Tyler Winklevoss. “For the consumer, it amounts to being crypto conscious. It’s like being green.”
